Mr & Mrs Jones live in a Warwickshire village with their 3 children and Labrador. Six years ago they had an extension built on their family home and created a large space to incorporate a kitchen, dining room and family room, but never really felt they had achieved the look they wanted.
In 2011 they decided to “spruce” up the space. They wanted a modern feel without losing the practicalities of coping with day to day family life. Jane Yates of Sweet Lime Interior Design was introduced to the family through a friend.
Mrs Jones explains:
“I love browsing through house magazines, but could never quite achieve the look myself. When we decided to re-visit the Kitchen, I knew I needed help and although my husband was reluctant at first, he soon came round to the idea.
Before any design work started, Jane spoke to us to understand how we use the space. She is calm and practical in her approach and listened carefully to what we wanted, for example, I love looking out onto our beautiful garden we wanted to bring the garden into the house. You think you can do it yourself but Jane came up with innovative ideas that I wouldn’t have considered. She gave me the encouragement and confidence needed to move away from my comfort zone of browns and beiges. She took great care to incorporate things into the design that are important to us as family; such as our Welsh heritage, our love of the seaside, natural stone and real wood.
Sweet Lime Interior Design played a key role in sourcing reliable, skilled, trades people and took the legwork away from me, by researching and sourcing furniture and accessories. Jane created a mood board outlining the colour schemes, products and materials to be used for the room and produced a detailed scaled plan. Both were invaluable in helping us visualise the end result.
Throughout the project, an important part of the relationship between you and your interior designer is the ability to discuss the overall plan and to make changes; Sweet Lime Interior Design were fully able to do this.
Sweet Lime Interior Design saved us a lot of time by finding the right products from local suppliers wherever possible. We wanted good quality but cost-effective fabrics for our curtains and cushions. Sweet Lime sourced a Welsh fabric which was perfect for us – we would not have known where to start looking.
As a family we like to collect drift wood and so Jane brought this, plus slate and other natural materials into the design. She managed to do this whilst keeping the contemporary but stylish room we wanted, which can be particularly difficult when bringing children into the equation!
Jane introduced us to a wonderful cabinet maker in Stratford who is currently making a contemporary oak breakfast/dining table and we explored other retailers together to ensure we got the right soft furnishings. Sweet Lime Interior Design made the arrangements to meet suppliers at our home at our convenience which again made best use of our time.
Lighting was a big issue for us because the room was dark in some areas so Sweet Lime Interior Design introduced us to a local lighting company and we worked with them to achieve the effect we wanted.
We needed a fireplace/storage area that could be used differently as the children grew older but we didn’t really know where to start. It needed to work as an effective storage space but without compromising the look we were trying to achieve. Jane designed an amazing oak shelving unit, sourced the wood and the carpenter to produce it and it looks absolutely beautiful even when it’s full of children’s toys.
Another challenge we faced was how to include a fire to make the room feel comfortable and homely on cold nights. Sweet Lime Interior Design came up with the idea of putting in a corner stud wall in order to fit a flueless fire. Jane then took all the stress away from us as she sourced the fire, liaising with the Sales Team, ensuring the correct size was ordered and that the heat output was sufficient for the space and we love the finished result.
Where possible Jane used local trades people; the Venetian blinds were sourced from a Kenilworth Company and they give the room a cosy feel without compromising the view of the garden and is something we would not have even considered. Our curtains were also made locally. I would not have opted for extra long full curtains, but the fullness and richness was needed for the door and has made a huge difference to the overall feel of the room.
Throughout the project, Jane of Sweet Lime Interior Design listened to our views and together we made changes to the plan as the project progressed. Much of the advice provided by Sweet Lime Interior Design was implemented.
I would definitely use Jane Yates of Sweet Lime Interior Design again and would recommend her to others. Sweet Lime Interior Design has added character and warmth to an important living space. Jane’s scaled room plan made the decision-making for buying furniture and fittings very easy for us. We made the right decisions ‘first time’, because Jane did all of the research and dramatically reduced the amount of time that we would have spent in browsing and shopping. We had the confidence to invest in some key items for the room. Sweet Lime Interior Design also ensured that we saw the project through and did not let it drag on. We are now clear on what will look right and what won’t when choosing additional accessories for the room.
Sweet Lime Interior Design offers good value for money due to the savings made by selecting the right products, from the right suppliers, at a competitive price. As a busy working mum, time is a precious commodity and Jane certainly helped me make the most effective use of my time.
My advice, if you are looking to employ an interior designer, is that you need to feel comfortable with them, have a good working relationship which allows you to mutually evolve the design throughout the project.
Jane Yates of Sweet Lime Interior Design ticked all those boxes and more. I will definitely be employing her services again. We now have a beautiful but practical room to live in.
